Potency and Effects of Animal Repellents

posted by Guest Author in Health

There are of many kinds of animal repellents and there should always be one suited to your need and adaptable to your personal taste. These self-defense products are usually in aerosol forms which can be fired at an effective range of five feet to thirty five feet away from you with the effect of immobilizing the attacker. These products can protect ourselves without necessarily taking another life be it animal or human.

The bigger the size, the larger is the volume and the farther is the firing capacity of these animal repellents. They are carefully designed to be fired at a distance far enough away from you to deter the attacker from getting near you. The size of the canister and the particular model of these animal repellents have variable firing distance and effect on the animals depending also on the size of the creature.

Pepper is the usual ingredient of these products which causes blinding effect on the animals as well as humans. These animal repellents come in several models with corresponding distinct different features that will suit to your specific needs. They also come in different sizes and colors with respective accessories of your choice. There are also refills available for some models of these products.

Some animal repellents have modified ingredients like the wildfire pepper sprays which contains pure hot pepper applicable to fierce attackers. There are spray guns too which come in blue and pink and suitable to childrens use with adult supervision. The responsible adults or parents must educate the children on the proper use of these products for these are not toys but defense weapons.

One type of these animal repellents is the mace triple action which is one with a highly-devastating effect. It functions as a tear gas which makes the eyes to close coupled with uncontrollable coughing and choking to incapacitate the attacker for some time. Strict EPA guidelines for the protection and preservation of animals are followed accordingly for the design and formulation of these animal repellents.

Some History About Contact Lenses

posted by Guest Author in Health

If you’ve been wearing glasses for a number of years, like me, then you may be wondering if contact lenses are right for you? There are a number of advantages to wearing contact lenses over eyeglasses and you may find that you like them better. Take a few minutes to read some good information about contact lenses and how to get them for yourself.

A Little History

Contacts actually date back into the 19th century if you can believe it. The first ones were made of brown glass and were quite difficult to wear as you might imagine but they were helpful to people with particular eye problems that could not wear glasses. Some significant breakthroughs in the 1940s and 1950s when plastic lenses were introduced. These new contacts were made of a hard plastic called polymethyl methacrylte, which did not allow gas like oxygen to pass through them. The better contact lenses that we have today are rigid gas permeable, which do allow oxygen to easily pass through them. This is important because the cornea of your eye needs oxygen from the air since it does not get oxygen from your blood.

We’ve seen in the last few years how contact lens technology is still improving. People that have astigmatism can now get toric contact lenses. And people that need bifocal lenses can now get special contacts made, too.

Why Do People Wear Contacts?

Most people’s primary advantages for wearing contact lenses is for cosmetic purposes, but there are also other reasons:

* With contact lenses, the lens moves as your eye moves, which is different from glasses, which can often distort images.

* Your side vision is not obstructed with the frame of the eyeglasses.

* It’s annoying when eyeglasses steam up when you come from the cold outside into a warm room.

* Contacts don’t get dirty like the lenses on glasses do and they don’t get rain or snow on them when you’re outside in the weather.

* The protection of contacts can often help someone with an injured cornea.

How Can I Get Contacts if I Want to Wear Them?

You should go see your eye doctor and get an eye exam and consultation. You cannot order contact lenses with a prescription for eyeglasses. It’s a much different kind of prescription that you need. You’ll go through some simple vision tests which only take about 10-15 minutes usually. You should also get tested for Glaucoma, if possible – that’s the test that Rachel on Friends didn’t like because it shoots a tiny puff of air into your eye. It’s really not that bad and its an important test to get.

A Quick Overview On How To Buy A Mountain Bike

posted by Guest Author in Exercise

In the last decade, mountain biking exploded in popularity. It’s healthy, fun, exciting, and a wonderful way to see the outdoors and keep you fit. It’s enjoyed all over the world by people of all ages, sizes and fitness levels.

Naturally, more demand brings more choices. Today, when there is so many manufacturers, brands, types, shapes and sizes, it can be quite difficult to choose a bike that suits you the best. Hopefully, this short guide will help you out.

What type of bike should I get? This is a very important question, because bikes are made for different terrains and types of riding. There are 3 main categories to choose from – downhill/freeride, cross country, and all-mountain. Do you need full suspension, or will the front suspension do ok?

What size bike do I need? Simply put, you need a bike that fits you. Never buy a bike that doesn’t fit you. Common sizes are: 15″ or less (for people shorter than 5′4″), 17″ (for people between 5′4″ and 5′11″), 19″ (for people between 5′11″ and 6′2″), and 21″ and up (for people taller than 6′2″).

When you’re buying a new bike, you probably want a decent-quality bike that will keep you happy for awhile. Something not to expensive and not to cheap either. You must know that during the year prices can notably fluctuate. The best time to buy is September, because next year’s models come out and prices go down.

There are many different parts of a bike. When looking for quality you have to check out the frame material, quality of the important components such as brakes, derailleurs, shift levers, suspension fork, and so on. As always, you get what you pay for, so don’t be to cheap. A full-suspension bike for less than $200 is not quality.

When you eventually buy a bike, don’t forget on other important pieces of biking gear – helmet, water bottle, tire pump, bike shorts (your behind will be grateful), gloves and glasses.

To Get Familiar With The Acai Berry

posted by Guest Author in Weight Loss

The acai berry seems to have reached a sudden dizzying level of superstardom, but the fact is that this berry has been present on mother earth since centuries and has been used for its health benefits too. The acai is a native Brazilian fruit. It has been known in the rainforest region since several centuries. It is one of the staple foods of the region. But, it is only in the recent times that this berry has become popular outside this geographical region.

Acai berries are most popularly known for their high antioxidant content. They have the highest amount of antioxidants of all foods known today. Other foods that have a good antioxidant presence are grapes and blueberries. But the acai berry supersedes both these foods in terms of antioxidants. It has 10 times higher antioxidant property than grapes have and twice that of blueberries.

Apart from the antioxidants, acai berries are also known for the presence of other nutrients such as omega fats (which help in building up the helpful cholesterol in the body and reduce the harmful cholesterol amount), fibers, amino acids, proteins and vitamins A, B1 and E. Some health experts call acai berries as complete foods because of the high concentration of all these nutrients in them.

So, why is the acai berry so popular? The main reason for that is its high-potency nutrient content. There are various health benefits that are ascribed to the acai, including weight loss, mitigating aging signs, improving vision, improving cardiac health, controlling blood sugar levels, correcting cholesterol imbalances, improving mental health and sexual effectiveness and so on.

However, the acai berry is not a very stable food. It has a very short shelf life. The berry doesn’t endure for more than 24 hours after it is plucked. That is the reason the berry was not gettable outside of its geographical region until lately.

Today, we have advanced in methods of preservation. That makes it possible to import acai berry around the world in the form of various products. The usual products that are made from the acai berry include pulp, squash, freeze dried powder, juice and so on.

Tinnitus Test – Discovering And Coming To Terms with Tinnitus

posted by Guest Author in Health

Anybody who’s ever heard a ringing in their ears usually finds themselves puzzled over what might be causing it or what it really could mean. Generally it goes away after a few seconds or, at worst, minutes and we tend to forget about it. However if it doesn’t go away it could be the condition known as tinnitus, which is Latin for “ringing.” Tinnitus can be minor, or it can be a major inconvenience to someone suffering from it. If this sounds like something you are suffering from then maybe you should consider a tinnitus test.

Unceasing buzzing or ringing that comes in and out are two signs of a problem you might have with tinnitus. While sometimes a subtle hum, for many it could be higher-pitched whistling, which many times is more common. When it’s really bad, some people say tinnitus is there all day, every day.

People suffering from this problem will go to a doctor complaining of buzzing or ringing in the ear. Keep in mind that tinnitus itself isn’t an illness but a sign of some other condition that’s causing the buzzing or ringing. It might also occur because of an allergy or reaction to some medicine. Additionally, extreme noise can help to cause it. Remember to explain your symptoms to your physician when you’re being examined.

Tinnitus reveals itself through those ringing or whistling tones. Most of the time only the person suffering from it can hear them. It may be steady and long-lasting, or it may be intermittent. Tinnitus is different from the occasional ringing in the ear, though. That goes away soon enough. An old wife’s tale about this sort of ringing says that when it occurs, somebody somewhere is talking about you!

Tinnitus can be hard to describe because it’s so subjective. In one person, the ringing may be a minor nuisance; in others it can be a real issue. Even though tinnitus is usually only heard by the person who has it, sometimes it’s possible to actually hear it in the patient’s ear. This is called a “bruit,” which means the physical sound a medical condition, including tinnitus, can make.

If you suffer from steady or intermittent ringing in one or both ears, get an examination. Most of the time, a hearing test, called an audiometric exam, will be done. The doctor will use it in an attempt to gauge how serious the tinnitus is so that a treatment regimen can be devised. Discuss any issues you may have in a direct manner with your doctor, and try not to leave out anything out. Commonly, things like lapses in memory or general fatigue usually occur along with tinnitus.

See a doctor if you have prolonged buzzing or ringing in one or both ears. A tinnitus test doesn’t take much time and it isn’t very involved. But, you need to do everything you can to help your doctor identify its true cause or causes so that proper treatment can occur. Also, try to avoid allergy-causing foods, medicines or other substances, and be proactive in seeking help.

Techniques How To Meditate Correctly

posted by Guest Author in Health

More and more people are turning to techniques how to meditate for peace and inner satisfaction. However, with so many different forms to choose from, one is often at a loss as to which technique to follow. Most people think that New Age Meditation types are the right thing to follow. However, what most people do not know is that this is a derivative of either the Hinduism based or Zen based forms of meditation. In fact, most of the meditative techniques followed by people today are based on either of these two forms.

New names are the only thing that is new about these new age meditation techniques. So now, one has to choose the technique that is suitable for him or her. Instead of following what everybody is gong in for, it is best to judge and decide the best technique for yourself.

A derivative of this form of meditation is the Transcendental Meditation or yoga nidra, made popular by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during the 1960`s. This form teaches one to detach the mind completely from his or her surroundings. Concentrating on the breathing process is a good way of starting this meditation. Soon the mind enters a tranquil and aware state. This increases self-awareness and induces a sense of inner peace.

In the Transcendental type of meditation, one is required to sit quietly and focus on breathing. Slowly, one starts breathing slowly and deeply. Also, the continuous focus on inhalation and exhalation makes the mind tranquil and aware. The practitioner retreats within the inner-self and is unaware of the outside world.

In Zen based meditation, one is expected to be conscious of everything in their vicinity. The practitioner has to sit in a quiet place and consciously observe thoughts, situations, memories, images or worries and so on. Sensations sounds and smells are experienced here without any emotional involvement. A person gains clarity and becomes calm. France’s Thich Nhat Hanh`s vipassana, a Zen based technique, teaches a person to concentrate on the present. One is taught to do this by observing the breath and the sensations in the body. This helps one attain perfect concentration, blocking out outside distractions.

Why High LDL Cholesterol Is Bad For Your Health

posted by Guest Author in Health

A lot of bodily functions rely on cholesterol. Aside from the cholesterol naturally produced by the liver, it is absorbed from the food we eat. Our body needs cholesterol. However, atherosclerosis can occur if you have excessive cholesterol in your body.

There are several types of cholesterol. HDL, LDL and triglycerides. LDL is your low-density lipoprotein. It is considered to be the ‘bad’ cholesterol. The ‘good’ cholesterol is called HDL or high-density lipoproteins. Because LDL cholesterol has adverse affects on our health, it is deemed ‘bad’ because it contains mostly fats and almost zero proteins.

There are a lot of ways that high amounts of LDL cholesterol can have an adverse affect on the body. Because it is essentially fatty, it can cause clog arteries, that is why individuals who tend to have high cholesterol levels are advised by medical doctors to lower their LDL.

Medical doctors have already set certain cholesterol level goals each for LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. For LDL, doctors advice that they should be maintained in low proportions than the other two since they are not very useful and could also be capable of affecting the health.

Specifically, LDL cholesterol can heighten the risk of heart attack and stroke. Depending on whether a person is at high, moderate, or low risks, their LDL cholesterol level goal varies.

LDL cholesterol also varies in density and size. For example, the known “Pattern B” LDL, which is smaller in size and denser, is usually equated with high risks of having coronary heart diseases. Aside from the above-mentioned disorders, LDL cholesterol can also trigger other peripheral vascular diseases.

People with high levels of LDL cholesterol are also prone to diabetes mellitus. In particular, LDL cholesterol can highly affect your vascular functions. Some evidence shows that low-density lipoproteins can contain vasoconstrictor properties that in turn injure metabolic and/or vascular functions. This is mostly prone in the liver.

It is deemed better to maintain cholesterol goals and regulate its intake to also avoid major diseases such cancer. Even if most studies still remain relatively non-conclusive, medical authorities advice people to be a more careful with LDL cholesterol since in certain occasions and cases, it shows patterns of connection to various types of cancer.
